JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State is currently seeking a strong leader and top fundraiser in the role of Executive Director of Foundation Relations to engage alumni and friends as partners in supporting the University. As a member of the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR), you can play an integral role in Penn State’s future and contribute to one of the most successful fundraising and alumni relations operations in the country.

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts, the Executive Director of Foundation Relations will be responsible for increasing private philanthropy to the University as provided through family and private foundations. The successful candidate will lead a professional team of seven, including six gift officers and one support staff. In this role, the Executive Director of Foundation Relations is expected to:

  • Work collaboratively with campus deans and other senior administrators, college and campus directors of development, and key faculty to advance the mission of Penn State while maximizing gift support from foundation partners;

  • Articulate Penn State’s needs, ambitions, and values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, through excellent informal and formal communications, including written proposals;

  • Develop and implement an annual development plan focused on expanding and enhancing foundation relationships and increasing funding for top university priorities and key campaign initiatives;

  • Manage, mentor, and lead the foundation relations staff;

  • Work closely and collaboratively with other development team directors and directors of development throughout the organization

  • Manage a personal portfolio of foundation prospects and provide oversight and guidance to team members who manage a broader portfolio of prospects;

  • Manage a budget;

  • Participate in key development meetings;

  • Establish, track, and achieve key metrics and measures of success for the foundation relations office;

  • Serve as an ambassador for the University and its priorities and values.

This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree or higher and 10+ years of relevant experience, includes 3+ years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A work history in the area of foundation relations, either in an academic or nonprofit setting is preferred. The Executive Director of Foundation Relations should also:

  • Possess a creative approach to increasing fundraising success;

  • Show a dedication to and understanding of the skills required to build relationships with diverse communities;

  • Demonstrate knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education;

  • Be comfortable interacting with foundation executives and have demonstrated experience managing teams and interdisciplinary projects;

  • Have the ability to travel and represent Penn State;

  • Demonstrate experience in managing and leading goal-oriented teams and in planning development strategies;

  • Have impeccable writing, presentation skills, and the ability to use various technologies;

  • Possess a passion for higher education and an understanding of complex institutions;

  • Commit to professional development, learning, and being mentored.

Operation of a motor vehicle as part of the position’s duties and a valid driver's license are required. Successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required.

This is a fully in-person position at Penn State’s University Park campus in State College, PA.

This position is based at the University Park campus, located in State College, Pennsylvania. The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$97,100.00 - $145,700.00
